My Culinary Travel Journal : “Pitik lan Sambel” TELKOM Bandung

When you see a cuisine named “pitik,” some people certainly would be curious and want to know what it is and how the taste is. “Kampoeng Pitik” or “Kampit,” a food stall located in STT TELKOM area in Buah Batu, Bandung. We were not hard to get here. Actually there are many food stalls that serve various foods, start from traditional food, sea food,  until junk food. But the most made me curious is a cuisine named “pitik”.

Anybody who through in front of  “Kampoeng Pitik” could see the special menu from “pitik” completed with the list price. Of course it would not make anybody who want to come in to “Kampit” worry what the price is too expensive or not. “Pitik” is a word from Javanese means chicken. After had known that “Pitik” is chicken, the curiosity was not loss. The food’s name is unique, such as “pitik pocong,” “pitik kuluyuk,” “pitik pocong,” “pitik negro” and “pitik madu.” There are also different “sambel” which would make the chicken be more luscious. Beside that some drinks have also unique name, such as “es teh kembung,” “kopi joss,” “lemon squash,” “lemon tea” and “coklat wae.”

Then I decided to order “pitik madu” completed with “sambel bajak” and “lemon squash.” “Pitik madu” is roasted chicken with honey that had been boiled before added by secret flavor. The taste was sweet and the chicken was tender. It was more luscious when it was eaten with “sambel bajak” that was quite spicy. There was aroma of “terasi” that had been baked before, so “terasi” was not dominant. Beside “sambel bajak” there are “sambel dabu-dabu” which tasted “kemangi,” “sambel nanas” which was little sour because of pinaplle and the most spicy sauce is “sambel mercon.”

The taste of “pitik negro” was like “ayam kecap”. But the chicken was boiled and roasted with secret flavor too. “Pitik pocong” is fried chicken that had been boiled with special flavor. The last is “pitik kuluyuk”. It was like chicken fillet but it was completed by special sauce from oyster sauce with onion. This roasted chicken is different with the other. Not only by the taste, but also by the names which were unique. Beside that we are not only can taste just one “sambel” to make the chicken be more luscious, but we are also can taste the other “sambel.” Over all it was luscious.

The curiosity about “es teh kembung” finally answered. It was ice tea. But it just used a glass which was very large and bloated. That was so funny drink. And about “kopi joss,” it was a cup of coffee that added by charcoal. When the charcoal was added to the coffee, the sound was jssssssssssss……, so it named “kopi joss.” The freshness could be tasted by lemon squash. It was soft drink that mixed by lemon.

This cuisine of “pitik” basically derived from Yogyakarta, Central Java. So that’s why it was queer to hear for a Sundanese like me. “Pitik madu,” “sambel mercon” and “es teh kembung” were the best seller in “Kampoeng Pitik.” The prime customers are STT TELKOM students. The atmosphere of “Kampit” was so closely with educational environment. This area would be more and more crowded in the afternoon.

Previously we had been looking for food stalls that serve luscious and unique food, but what we saw along the way on Buah Batu was just usual food stall such as meatball, chicken noodle, “Padang” food, etc. and actually it was so quite hard to look for a unique food stall. But it made my culinary travel was memorable. That is why I believe that the unusual and unique food or drink’s name could attract the customers. It is one of great marketing strategy.
